Owned by brothers Ghulam Mustafa and Ghulam Mohiuddin, this iconic hotel features 76 rooms, including a new wing of 30 rooms. A Warm Welcome after a Chilly Adventure
Upon our arrival from Ulley, after tracking the elusive snow leopard in frigid temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius, the warmth of the Grand Dragon was an immediate comfort. The hotel’s central heating and luxurious accommodations provided a stark contrast to the icy terrain we had just left behind, making it the perfect haven for adventurers and travelers alike.
Heritage Architecture Meets Modern Elegance
Despite its modern amenities, the Grand Dragon exudes a strong sense of local tradition with its Tibetan-Buddhist Ladakhi-style architecture. Our favorite spot was the Zasgyath Coffee Shop, where we enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast while admiring the dramatic view of the surrounding mountains. The traditional wooden balconies and the intricately gilded interiors are reminiscent of Ladakhi monasteries, blending history with opulence.
A Legacy of Ladakhi Craftsmanship
Opened in 2007, the Grand Dragon is more than just a luxury hotel—it’s a showcase of Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage. The hotel’s interiors are adorned with Ladakhi woodwork, and the décor echoes the prayer halls of the region’s ancient monasteries. Teak wood floors, pine-wood carved balconies, and walls embellished with antique turquoise jewelry give the hotel a deeply rooted sense of place

For those seeking even more space and comfort, the family suites span over 750 square feet, while the luxury suites cover an expansive 900 square feet. These suites are draped in jewel-toned brocades and furnished with teak wood ceilings, creating an atmosphere of understated elegance. Cuisine That Warms the Soul
During our stay, we indulged in local Ladakhi delicacies like momos and timstuk (a hearty meat and noodle broth) at the hotel’s coffee shop. The views from the terrace, overlooking the Stok Kangri range, were nothing short of breathtaking. In the summer, guests can dine alfresco, soaking in the magnificent scenery that surrounds them.
Caring for Guests at High Altitudes
Given Ladakh’s high altitude, the hotel ensures the well-being of its guests by providing garlic soup, known for its altitude-sickness-relieving properties. A doctor is always on call, and oxygen levels are monitored at check-in, offering peace of mind to travelers unaccustomed to the high altitude

As we gazed out of our room’s large window at the starry night sky over the snow-capped mountains, we couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of Ladakh. The Grand Dragon Ladakh offers not just a place to stay but a luxurious retreat where history, culture, and nature come together seamlessly.
