The mountains seem to bring out a different energy in me, suspending my usual logic and reminding me that I need to escape the city more often. From the moment I boarded my flight, I was in good spirits. The fact that Dehradun’s airport is called “Jolly Grant” added to the positive vibes. After a scenic drive through the winding mountain roads, I arrived at Hyatt Regency Dehradun, greeted by the sight of a large pine cone sculpture surrounded by a gently bubbling fountain. The check-in process was smooth, and I was offered a local hat and a unique drink that was salty, sweet, and pungent all at once – unlike anything I had tasted before.
Not Your Average Hill Retreat
Our suite faced the hills, offering a stunning view that looked straight out of a 90s Windows wallpaper. What impressed me most about Hyatt Regency Dehradun was its commitment to sustainability. Beyond the usual requests to reuse linens and the use of glass water bottles, they welcomed us with a message written in leaves, a simple yet thoughtful touch. The rooms were spacious, perfect for storing bulky coats and sweaters – a necessity since the nights were quite chilly.
The hotel’s expansive lawns, dotted with cozy chairs, provided the ideal spot to snuggle up with a book or simply enjoy the tranquility. For anyone who feels overwhelmed by city life, this is a place where you can truly unwind.
A Culinary Delight
For food lovers like me, the dining experience at Hyatt Regency Dehradun was a highlight. The Range, their main restaurant, offered an international spread, including a sushi counter that I might have single-handedly emptied. The Malt Bar was equally impressive, with bartenders crafting delicious cocktails to the backdrop of live music. Special thanks to the restaurant manager, Rishabh Tyagi, for taking care of our every need, and bartender Shankie for making the most fragrant, unsweetened cocktails – I definitely had one too many! My adventurous side fully embraced the evening, dancing into the night.
For those willing to brave the cold, Beyul, the rooftop bar, offers stunning views of the city lights and a warm, heart-warming menu. If you visit during Christmas, you’re in for a treat with Hyatt Regency’s festive brunches and dinners. The Market is the place to indulge in holiday treats like plum cakes, handcrafted cookies, and chocolate Santas. And after a hearty Christmas Eve dinner or brunch on the 25th, you’ll be glad to know that a comfortable bed awaits.
Relaxation in the Hills
Although it might not seem like a traditional relaxation activity, the hotel offers a variety of excursions, including treks. Early one morning, I laced up my shoes and joined a small trek through the woods. With the cool breeze and chirping birds, the experience was refreshing and peaceful – a rare moment of calm in my otherwise busy life. Knowing that a spa session awaited me afterward certainly helped motivate me, too.
Speaking of the spa, Hyatt Regency Dehradun’s spa was a luxurious escape. The dim lighting, soothing music, and gentle fragrance of the rooms made it easy to relax. My therapist worked wonders on my tired shoulders, leaving me feeling utterly rejuvenated. I spent the rest of the day sipping green tea and enjoying a quiet, peaceful afternoon – followed by a four-hour nap.
Before leaving, I decided to try out the rooftop pool. In retrospect, I probably should have listened to my instincts and stayed warm indoors. The water was freezing, and despite my best efforts, I couldn’t generate enough body heat. After a quick dip, I retreated to the warmth of the winter sun, letting it thaw me out.
